Objectives
Solve systems of linear equations in two variables by substitution
Use substitution is to reduce the system to one equation with only one variable
Sometimes it is difficult to identify the exact solution to a system by graphing. In such cases, you can use a method called substitution. The substitution method provides an algebraic way for calculating the precise values to the solution of a linear system.

Solve a Linear System Using the Substitution Method
The solution for example 1 is shown in the slide show to the right. Hover over the image and use the left and right arrows to follow each step of the solution.
This video solves the linear system in Ex (2) using the substitution method.
This video solves the linear system in Ex (3) using the substitution method.
Solve Word Problems by Substitution Method
Problem 1: A jar with 20 coins and a total value of $ 1.40 is filled with nickels and dimes only. How many of each coin are in the jar?
Problem 1 Solution
Problem 2: The length of a rectangle is 3 more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 58 cm. What are the dimensions of the rectangle?
Problem 2 Solution
Problem 3: You are shopping for a high speed mobile internet connection. Provider A has a $50 equipment fee and charges $30 per month for service. Provider B has no equipment fee, but charges $40 per month for service. How many months will it take for the accrued costs to be the same? What will be the total cost at that time?
